About Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai is the second-biggest province of Thailand, strategically located in the northern end of the country. Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Tak and Mae Hong Son are its neighbouring provinces. It has the frontier border with Shan State of Myanmar to the north.

Being the gateway to Northern Thailand with the population of approximately 180,000, officially covering the city of Chiang Mai most of the Muang Chiang Mai district with a population of 150,000, the urbanised area of the city extends into several neighbouring districts where the Metropolitan Area has a population of approximately 700,000 people, nearly half of the whole Chiang Mai Province.

In the recent years, Chiang Mai has become an increasingly modern city, although it lacks the cosmopolitan gloss of Bangkok with lots of attractions for the influx of foreign visitors who come to the city every year. Its historic strength derived from Chiang Mai's strategic location on an ancient trade route which is long before the modern influx of foreign visitors to the city served as an important centre for handcrafted goods, culturally-designed umbrellas, jewelry and woodcarving goods.

Chiang Mai is the second most significant town in Thailand after Bangkok and is the main town in the northern region. Chiang Mai is a city of ancient arts and crafts following the proud tradition of ancient Lan Na Thai culture.
