Chiang Mai is the second-biggest province
of Thailand, strategically located in the northern end of the country. Chiang
Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Tak and Mae Hong Son are its neighbouring provinces.
It has the frontier border with Shan State of Myanmar to the north.
Being the gateway to Northern Thailand with the population of approximately
180,000, officially covering the city of Chiang Mai most of the Muang Chiang
Mai district with a population of 150,000, the urbanised area of the city extends
into several neighbouring districts where the Metropolitan Area has a population

In the recent years, Chiang Mai has become an increasingly modern city, although
it lacks the cosmopolitan gloss of Bangkok with lots of attractions for the
influx of foreign visitors who come to the city every year. Its historic strength
derived from Chiang Mai's strategic location on an ancient trade route which
is long before the modern influx of foreign visitors to the city served as an
important centre for handcrafted goods, culturally-designed umbrellas, jewelry
and woodcarving goods.
Chiang Mai, also called as Nophaburi Sri Nakhon Ping or Viang Ping Chiang
Mai in ancient era, was founded as the capital of the Lan Na Thai (Kingdom of
a Million Ricefields) by King Mengrai in 1296 A.D. The city you see today, celebrated
its 700th anniversary in 1996, has been evolved over many centuries. Chiang
Mai is the second most significant town in Thailand after Bangkok and is the
main town in the northern region. Chiang Mai is a city of ancient arts and crafts
following the proud tradition of ancient Lan Na Thai culture.
Covered by vast array of mountains, extending in the south-north direction,
is where Chiang Mai located. Ping River (Mae Nam Ping in Thai), is one of the
major tributaries of the Chao Phraya River originating at Chiang Dao mountains
where it begins. Doi Inthanon, 2,575 meter in height, considered the highest
in Thailand, is also situated in Chiang Mai. There are many national parks in
this area such as Mae Ping, Chiang Dao, Doi Suthep-pui, Doi Inthanon, Mae Phang,
Sri Lanna, Huay Nam Dang.
This Northern State of Thailand, Chiang Mai, located at an elevation of 310
metres above sea level, is approximately 715 kilometers away from Bangkok. The
West of Chiang Mai are Pai, Khun Yuam and Mae Sareang districts of Mae Hong
Son Province. To the north is its border with Myanmar’s Shan State, and to the
east are Chiang Rai, Lamphun and Lampang. To the south is Sam Ngao District
of Tak Province.
